14 Days Uganda Gorilla & Rwanda Safari: Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe Airport and Transfer to Kampala
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel in Kampala. Use the rest of the day to rest and adjust, with an evening briefing covering the fourteen days ahead.
Day 2: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park
Distance: approximately 305 km, roughly 5–6 hours driving. Drive north to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest national park, settling into your lodge ahead of tomorrow’s game drive and boat cruise. Many itineraries add a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary along this route — worth requesting if rhino tracking interests you.
Day 3: Game Drive and Afternoon Boat Cruise
Morning game drive across Murchison Falls National Park’s northern bank, with strong odds of lions, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo across the open plains. In the afternoon, a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile toward the base of the falls delivers hippos, crocodiles, and — with real luck — the elusive shoebill stork along the riverbanks. Our guide to Murchison Falls facts covers more of what makes this park distinct.
Day 4: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park
Distance: approximately 350–370 km, roughly 6–7 hours driving via Fort Portal. This is genuinely the longest single travel day of the whole fourteen days. Continue south to Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda’s premier chimpanzee trekking destination and home to the highest concentration of primates anywhere in East Africa. Fort Portal makes a natural lunch stop roughly halfway along the route.
Day 5: Chimp Trekking and a Nature Walk
Morning chimpanzee trekking through Kibale’s forest, tracking one of the park’s habituated chimp communities with a real chance of spotting red colobus and other primate species along the way. In the afternoon, a guided nature walk through the surrounding forest and wetland — often including Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary — rounds out the day with strong birdlife and a gentler pace after the morning’s trek.
Day 6: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Distance: approximately 75 km, roughly 2 hours driving. A short, easy transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most biodiverse parks, spanning savanna, wetland, and forest habitat in a single reserve.
Day 7: Game Drive and Boat Cruise
Morning game drive across the Kasenyi Plains for lions, elephants, and Uganda kob, followed by a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, consistently one of the richest wildlife-viewing experiences in East Africa, with dense concentrations of hippos, buffalo, and waterbirds along the banks.
Day 8: Game Drive and Transfer to Bwindi National Park
Distance: approximately 5–6 hours driving via the Ishasha route. Morning game drive through the Ishasha sector in search of Queen Elizabeth’s famous tree-climbing lions, before continuing south to Bwindi. This is the second long travel day of the trip; the Ishasha game drive genuinely breaks up the transfer with real wildlife viewing rather than pure transit time.
Day 9: Gorilla Trekking Adventure
The centerpiece of this itinerary’s Uganda gorilla safari leg: a full day of mountain gorilla trekking through Bwindi’s dense, ancient forest, culminating in an unforgettable hour with a habituated gorilla family. Uganda’s gorilla permit runs $800 per person, notably less than Rwanda’s equivalent.
Day 10: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
Distance: roughly 3–5 hours driving, including the border crossing, depending on your departure sector and border post used. Cross into Rwanda and continue to the Musanze/Kinigi area near Volcanoes National Park. Rwanda’s roads are noticeably smoother once you cross, and the terraced hillside scenery along this route is genuinely one of the trip’s more memorable drives.
Day 11: Golden Monkey Tracking and Transfer to Kigali
Morning golden monkey tracking through Volcanoes National Park’s bamboo forest, a genuinely lively, fast-paced encounter with these energetic primates found only in the Virunga Massif and a small section of Nyungwe Forest. Afternoon transfer to Kigali: approximately 119 km, roughly 3 hours driving. Settle into your Kigali hotel ahead of the Akagera extension.
Day 12: Transfer to Akagera National Park and Boat Cruise
Distance: approximately 110 km, roughly 2–2.5 hours driving. A genuinely easy morning transfer east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only Big Five destination and a real change of scenery after the forest-heavy first ten days. In the afternoon, a boat cruise on Lake Ihema delivers hippos, crocodiles, and strong waterbird sightings along the shoreline.
Day 13: Full-Day Game Drives in Akagera National Park
A full day exploring Akagera’s savanna, woodland, and wetland habitat, with real chances of lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and — genuinely notable given Akagera’s conservation success story — both black and white rhino, reintroduced to the park after decades of local extinction.
Day 14: Transfer Back to Kigali for Departure
Distance: approximately 110 km, roughly 2–2.5 hours driving. A final morning transfer back to Kigali, arriving in time for your international departure flight, bringing your 14 days Uganda Gorilla & Rwanda safari to a close.

What This 14 Day Uganda Gorilla & Rwanda Safari Costs
With Uganda’s lower-cost gorilla permit, a full Akagera Big Five extension, and fourteen genuinely full days across two countries, this itinerary typically runs from $5,500 to $8,500+ per person, depending on accommodation tier, group size, and season. Gorilla and chimp permits sell out well in advance during peak season, so we recommend booking at least 3–4 months ahead of your intended travel dates.
Compare This Itinerary to Our Other East Africa Safaris
If two full weeks feels like more than you need, our 12 Days Uganda Rwanda Gorilla, Chimp & Wildlife Safari covers the same core route without the Akagera extension. Travelers wanting Rwanda’s gorillas rather than Uganda’s should look at our 12 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari instead, and our 10 Days Rwanda Uganda Wildlife & Primate Safari and 7 Days Rwanda Uganda Safari offer shorter variations on combining both countries. Our 12 Day East Africa Combined Safari leans harder into chimpanzee trekking and Bwindi specifically.
If you’d rather isolate the Akagera leg or extend it further, our 1 Day Akagera National Park Safari covers that park in more depth on its own. For individual legs of the Uganda side, our 4 Days Murchison Falls Safari, 3 Days Kibale National Park Safari, and 4 Days Bwindi Gorilla Trek and Lake Mburo each stand alone as shorter trips. Our 3 Days Golden Monkey Safari covers Day 11’s activity in more depth, and our full Safari Combos collection covers every cross-border itinerary we offer.
For accommodation planning, our guides to safari lodges in Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park accommodation cover lodge options across every budget tier. Our broader Rwanda primates safari, gorilla permits in Rwanda, and things to do in Volcanoes National Park guides are worth reading too if you’re deciding how much time to dedicate to Rwanda’s side of the trip.
