DAY 4  Mountain Gorilla Trekking — The Day That Changes Everything

This is gorilla trekking day — and after a decade of guiding international visitors through Volcanoes National Park, the Gorilla Nests Safaris team can tell you unequivocally: most visitors describe this as the single most powerful wildlife experience of their lives. No photograph, no documentary, no description fully prepares you for sitting in the volcanic forest with a wild gorilla family. You simply have to be there.

Wake-up call 5:30 AM. Early luxury breakfast at your lodge — your chef prepares a full hot breakfast before dawn, served with the volcano silhouette darkening beyond the windows. Transfer to RDB headquarters at Kinigi for 7:00 AM registration and the mandatory pre-trek safety briefing from RDB rangers.

Golden monkey trekking in Rwanda

DAY 5  Golden Monkey Trekking + Optional Dian Fossey Hike

Day 5 gives you a second morning in Volcanoes National Park — this time with the golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti), one of Africa’s most visually spectacular primates.

Endemic to the Virunga volcanoes and found nowhere else on earth, the golden monkey is a medium-sized primate with electric bright orange-gold patches on the body and dark grey-black on the face, tail, and limbs.

A habituated troop of approximately 80–100 golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park has been accustomed to human presence through years of patient habituation work by RDB researchers.

Golden monkey trekking is joyously, chaotically different from gorilla trekking — the troop moves continuously through the bamboo at speed, vocalising, leaping, foraging, and interacting in ways that make an hour with them feel like watching the most beautiful fast-paced wildlife documentary from the inside. Optional Afternoon — Dian Fossey Grave Hike (Karisoke Research Centre)

For guests with energy after the morning golden monkey trek, Gorilla Nests Safaris offers the optional Dian Fossey grave hike — a 4–6 hour trek into Volcanoes National Park to Karisoke Research Centre, where Fossey lived, worked, and was murdered in 1985.

Fossey is buried here alongside Digit and other gorillas she devoted her life to protecting. The hike involves significant elevation gain through ancient forest and is rated moderate to challenging — but for anyone for whom Fossey’s work was a gateway to caring about wildlife conservation, standing in this clearing is one of the most moving experiences available in Africa. DAY 6  Musanze to Nyungwe Forest — Rwanda’s Ancient Canopy

After breakfast, depart Musanze southbound for Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda’s south-west — approximately 220 kilometres, 4.5–5 hours through some of the most spectacular landscape in Africa.

The road passes through Kigali without stopping, then descends south through Rwanda’s legendary tea country — the Gisakura tea estate on Nyungwe’s western boundary is one of the most photographed landscapes in East Africa, rolling green hills terraced to the horizon with the forest behind them.

Nyungwe Forest National Park covers 1,019 square kilometres of montane rainforest — Africa’s largest montane rainforest — and has been continuously forested for over a million years, making it one of the oldest ecosystems in the Congo Basin watershed. It contains 13 primate species, 310 bird species including 29 Albertine Rift endemics, and over 1,000 plant species.

The forest sounds, smells, and looks unlike any other ecosystem you will encounter in East Africa — darker, older, denser, and suffused with a quality of ancient wildness that even Bwindi’s extraordinary forest does not quite replicate.

DAY 7  Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest

Wake-up call 5:30 AM. Early breakfast. Transfer to RDB ranger station for the chimpanzee trekking briefing. Nyungwe’s habituated chimpanzee community is the focus of this morning — an encounter that differs dramatically from yesterday’s gorilla trekking and is extraordinary in its own completely different way.

Chimpanzees are fast, loud, dramatic, and deeply social in ways that gorillas — for all their majesty — are not. The sound of a Nyungwe chimpanzee troop calling through the ancient forest can be heard over a kilometre away — a wild, ecstatic cacophony of whoops, screams, and drumming that raises every hair on your body before you see a single animal.

The trek to find the community takes 1–3 hours, and when you find them, the one hour with the chimpanzee community is pure wildlife theatre: the alpha male drumming his feet on a buttress root, infants chasing each other through a fig tree, a dominant female approaching to within two metres with a calm directness that feels almost interrogatory.

8 Days Best Rwanda Highlights Safari

DAY 8  Nyungwe Canopy Walkway + Congo Nile Trail

Morning: the Nyungwe Forest canopy walkway — one of the most extraordinary structures in Africa. A suspension bridge system extending 200 metres at 50–70 metres above the forest floor, accessible via a well-maintained trail from the Uwinka visitor centre.

Walking across the canopy walkway gives you an entirely different perspective on Nyungwe: from ground level you look up and see canopy; from the walkway you look across and down into the forest roof, at eye level with the trees where the forest’s great concentrations of primates and birds move.

The black-and-white colobus monkeys — Nyungwe has one of Africa’s largest colobus populations, with troops of 300+ — are commonly seen from the canopy walkway, moving along the treetops in dramatic leaping sequences.

Red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys are also frequently visible from canopy height. Birding from the walkway is spectacular: Rwenzori turacos, Albertine owlet, and over 29 Albertine Rift endemic species are found at elevations impossible to access from the ground.

After breakfast, depart Nyungwe northbound for Akagera National Park in eastern Rwanda — approximately 4.5 hours through southern Rwanda’s rolling hills before the landscape opens into Akagera’s dramatic mix of open savannah, acacia woodland, and Nile-system lakes along the Tanzanian border.
