Exciting 12 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari

This 12 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari follows a genuinely sensible route through both countries — starting in Kampala, working west and south through Uganda’s strongest parks, and finishing in Rwanda for golden monkeys and culture before flying out of Kigali.

Unlike our 12 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari, which centers on Rwanda’s mountain gorillas paired with Uganda’s savanna parks, this itinerary flips the emphasis: Uganda gorilla trekking in Bwindi, chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, and Rwanda’s golden monkeys and cultural village round out a genuinely different primate-and-wildlife combination.

12 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari

12 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari: Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Pick-Up and Transfer to Kampala

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel in Kampala. Depending on your arrival time, use the rest of the day to rest and adjust, with an evening briefing covering the twelve days ahead.

Day 2: Transfer to Murchison Falls via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Distance: ~305 km, approximately 5–6 hours driving (plus time for the rhino tracking stop). Drive north toward Murchison Falls National Park, stopping en route at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for a guided rhino tracking walk — currently the only place in Uganda to see southern white rhinos in the wild, since Uganda’s wild rhino population was wiped out during the political instability of the 1970s and 80s. Continue on to Murchison Falls in the afternoon, settling into your lodge ahead of tomorrow’s activities.

Day 3: Murchison Falls Game Drive and Nile Boat Cruise

Morning game drive across Murchison Falls National Park’s northern bank, Uganda’s largest national park, with strong odds of lions, elephants, giraffes, and buffalo across the open plains. In the afternoon, a boat cruise along the Victoria Nile toward the base of the falls delivers hippos, crocodiles, and — with real luck — the elusive shoebill stork along the riverbanks. Our guide to Murchison Falls facts covers more of what makes this park distinct.

Day 4: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

Distance: approximately 350–370 km, roughly 6–7 hours driving via Fort Portal. Worth being upfront about this one — it’s genuinely the longest single travel day in the itinerary. A longer transfer day south to Kibale Forest National Park, Uganda’s premier chimpanzee trekking destination and home to the highest concentration of primates anywhere in East Africa. Fort Portal makes a natural lunch and fuel stop roughly halfway along the route. Settle into your lodge ahead of tomorrow’s chimp trek.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale, Transfer to Queen Elizabeth

Transfer distance: approximately 75 km, roughly 2 hours driving. Morning chimpanzee trekking through Kibale’s forest, tracking one of the park’s habituated chimp communities alongside a real chance of spotting red colobus and other primate species along the way. In the afternoon, a genuinely short and easy transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park, passing through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary country en route.

Day 6: Queen Elizabeth Game Drive and Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

Morning game drive across the Kasenyi Plains for lions, elephants, and Uganda kob, followed by an afternoon boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, consistently one of the richest wildlife-viewing experiences in East Africa, with dense concentrations of hippos, buffalo, and waterbirds along the banks.

Day 7: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Distance: roughly 5–6 hours driving via the Ishasha route. Drive south to Bwindi, passing through the Ishasha sector — home to Queen Elizabeth’s famous tree-climbing lions — before arriving in Bwindi and settling in ahead of tomorrow’s gorilla trek. This is the second long transfer day of the trip; many travelers appreciate the Ishasha stop specifically because it breaks the drive with genuine game viewing rather than pure transit.

Day 8: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The centerpiece of this itinerary’s Uganda gorilla safari leg: a full day of mountain gorilla trekking through Bwindi’s genuinely dense, ancient forest, culminating in an unforgettable hour with a habituated gorilla family. Uganda’s gorilla permit runs $800 per person, notably less than Rwanda’s equivalent, making this routing a genuinely cost-effective way to include gorilla trekking within a broader two-country trip.

Day 9: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

Distance: approximately 80 km, roughly 2 hours driving. A shorter, more relaxed transfer to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most scenic lakes, ringed by terraced hillsides and dotted with small islands. Use the afternoon to unwind with a canoe trip or simply enjoy the lake views after several intensive trekking days.

Day 10: Depart to Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Distance: roughly 2.5–3 hours driving, including the border crossing at Cyanika. Cross the border into Rwanda and continue to the Musanze/Kinigi area near Volcanoes National Park, passing through Rwanda’s famously terraced hillsides along the way. Border formalities typically add 30–60 minutes on top of driving time, and Rwanda’s roads are noticeably smoother and more predictable than Uganda’s once you cross. Settle into your lodge ahead of tomorrow’s activities.

Day 11: Golden Monkey Tracking and Iby’iwacu Cultural Village

Morning golden monkey tracking through Volcanoes National Park’s bamboo forest, a genuinely lively, fast-paced encounter with these energetic primates found only in the Virunga Massif and a small section of Nyungwe Forest. In the afternoon, visit Iby’iwacu Cultural Village for a deeper look at traditional Rwandan life, including dance performances, craft demonstrations, and conversations with former poachers now working in conservation — one of the most genuine cultural experiences included in any of our things to do in Volcanoes National Park.

Day 12: Transfer to Kigali and Departure

Distance: approximately 119 km, roughly 3 hours driving. A short final drive to Kigali, arriving in time for your international departure flight, bringing your 12 days Uganda Rwanda gorilla and wildlife safari to a close.

End of the 12 Days Rwanda Uganda Gorilla & Wildlife Safari.
