DAY 1 Arrive Kigali — Rwanda’s City of a Thousand Hills

Your 5-day Rwanda gorilla safari begins the moment you land at Kigali International Airport. DAY 2 Kigali to Musanze — Gateway to the Gorillas

After breakfast, depart Kigali for Musanze (Ruhengeri) — the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park and your base for the primate trekking days ahead.

The drive covers approximately 110 kilometres north-west through some of Rwanda’s most beautiful landscape: the steep, terraced hills that give the country its nickname “Land of a Thousand Hills,” rolling tea plantations, and banana groves opening progressively onto the flat plain at Musanze with the dramatic silhouette of the Virunga volcanoes — Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo — rising behind the town. DAY 3 Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

This is the day. Gorilla trekking day in Volcanoes National Park — the experience most visitors describe as the single most extraordinary moment of their lives.

Wake-up call at 5:30 AM. Early breakfast. Transfer to RDB headquarters at Kinigi for 7:00 AM registration and the mandatory pre-trek briefing. Rangers explain the rules of engagement with the gorilla families: maximum 8 trekkers per family, minimum 7-metre distance (though gorillas frequently move closer themselves — this is their forest, and they move on their own schedule), no flash photography, no eating or drinking in the gorilla’s presence, and crucially: if a silverback charges, crouch down, avoid eye contact, and absolutely do not run

By 7:30 AM your group sets off into the forest with 2 armed UWA rangers, 2 trackers, and your Gorilla Nests Safaris guide. The trek to find your assigned gorilla family can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the family moved overnight — trackers radio ahead from first light to locate them. Most treks in Volcanoes National Park take 2–4 hours, shorter than in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

On finding the gorillas — one hour of pure, unrepeatable wildlife. You sit, crouch, stand, and move quietly at the rangers’ direction, watching this gorilla family go about their morning: a silverback feeding, tilting his massive head to study you with calm intelligence; infants chasing each other through bamboo shoots; a teenage male chest-beating experimentally.

Your guide will point out individuals by name — every gorilla in every habituated family is known and monitored by RDB researchers. This is not a zoo encounter.

These gorillas are fully wild. They have simply grown accustomed to a small number of calm, non-threatening humans visiting for exactly one hour each morning.

DAY 4 Golden Monkey Trekking + Dian Fossey Option

Day 4 is the golden monkey day — and for many visitors, it turns out to be just as exhilarating as the gorilla day, in a completely different way.

The golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti) is one of the most visually spectacular primates in Africa — covered in a vivid patchwork of bright orange-gold on the body and black on the face, limbs, and tail, living exclusively in the bamboo forests of the Virunga volcanoes and nowhere else on earth.

A habituated troop of approximately 80–100 golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park has been accustomed to human presence through patient habituation work by RDB researchers, making them approachable on guided treks.

Unlike gorilla trekking’s solemn, slow-paced encounter, golden monkey trekking is joyously chaotic — the troop moves continuously through the bamboo canopy at speed, the adults foraging and vocalising, infants chasing each other and tumbling through shoots.
