DAY 1 Arrive Kigali — Rwanda’s City of Hills

Your 7-day Rwanda gorilla and chimpanzee safari begins at Kigali International Airport. Your Gorilla Nests Safaris driver meets you at arrivals with a name board and transfers you to your Kigali hotel (15–20 minutes). Rwanda is immediately different from what most visitors expect of Africa: the city is extraordinarily clean, quiet, and genuinely beautiful across its rolling hills.

If you arrive with afternoon energy, the Kigali Genocide Memorial (30 minutes from the airport) is the most important single site in Rwanda for any visitor who wants to understand the country they are arriving into.

DAY 2 Kigali Full-Day Cultural Tour

Morning begins with Kimironko Market — Kigali’s largest public market, a vivid, crowded, completely un-touristy experience of everyday Rwandan urban life. Fresh food from the Eastern Province, imported cloth from Tanzania and China, handmade crafts from individual vendors in the side stalls. Your guide navigates, translates, and buys you coffee from a market stall that has been selling it from the same spot since the 1990s.

Mid-morning: Inema Arts Centre in Kacyiru — Rwanda’s most important contemporary African arts gallery, founded by brothers Emmanuel and Innocent Nkurunziza. DAY 3 Kigali to Musanze — Into the Virungas’ Shadow

After breakfast, your Gorilla Nests Safaris vehicle departs Kigali for Musanze — the gateway town to Volcanoes National Park, approximately 110 kilometres north-west on a fully tarmacked road.

The drive takes 2.5–3 hours through Rwanda’s most cinematic landscape: urban Kigali’s hills give way to cascading agricultural terraces, eucalyptus ridges, and banana groves, and the road rises steadily until the Virunga volcanoes emerge ahead — Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, Sabyinyo — five peaks in a row that look almost theatrical against the equatorial sky.

Arrive Musanze mid-morning. Check in to your lodge. After lunch, the afternoon offers:

DAY 4 Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Wake-up call 5:30 AM. Early breakfast. Drive to Kinigi headquarters for 7:00 AM registration and the final pre-trek briefing. Your group of up to 8 trekkers sets off at 7:30 AM with 2 armed RDB rangers, 2 trackers who located the family at first light, and your Gorilla Nests Safaris guide.

Volcanoes National Park is the setting of Dian Fossey’s decades-long gorilla research, the inspiration for Gorillas in the Mist, and the park that more than any other single place turned the mountain gorilla from a trajectory toward extinction onto one of conservation’s greatest recovery stories — from 254 individuals in 1981 to over 1,000 today. You are walking into that story.

The trek to your assigned gorilla family can take 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on how far the family moved overnight — most Volcanoes National Park treks run 2–4 hours. The forest is steep, dense, and genuinely wild. When trackers radio that the family has been located, the pace quickens. Then — through a curtain of bamboo — you see them.

One hour. The most extraordinary hour in African wildlife. A silverback weighing 180–230 kg resting 3 metres away, studying you with calm intelligence. Infants chasing each other through bamboo shoots at your feet. A female nursing with an expression of complete maternal focus. Every individual is known to RDB researchers by name. DAY 5 Musanze to Nyungwe Forest — Rwanda’s Ancient South

After breakfast, depart Musanze southbound for Nyungwe Forest National Park — approximately 220 kilometres south through Rwanda’s most beautiful overland route. The road takes you through Rwanda’s tea country: the Gisakura estate on Nyungwe’s western boundary is one of the most photographed landscapes in East Africa, an unbroken panorama of terraced dark green tea rolling across valley after valley.

Total drive time: 4–5 hours. Arrive Nyungwe early afternoon. Check in to your forest-edge lodge.

Nyungwe Forest National Park covers 1,019 square kilometres of montane rainforest — Africa’s largest montane rainforest, continuously forested for over a million years. It contains:

DAY 6 Chimpanzee Trekking + Nyungwe Canopy Walkway

The finest single day on any Rwanda primate safari itinerary: morning chimpanzee trekking, afternoon canopy walkway. Two experiences that each belong on any serious wildlife traveller’s list — back to back in one day.

Morning: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe Forest

Wake-up call 5:30 AM. Early breakfast. Transfer to ranger station for the pre-trek briefing.

Nyungwe’s habituated chimpanzee communities have been studied and habituated for years by RDB researchers. The chimpanzee trekking permit in Nyungwe costs USD $90 per person — a fraction of the gorilla permit — but the experience is no less extraordinary in its own register. Chimpanzees share 98.6% of human DNA, are significantly louder, faster, and more socially complex than gorillas in the ways visible to trekkers: the alpha male chest-drumming on a root buttress, dominant females approaching with direct, almost interrogatory curiosity, juveniles chasing each other up and down a fig tree.

The trek to find the chimpanzees typically takes 1–3 hours — chimps range across larger territories than gorillas and move more unpredictably. Your one hour with the habituated chimpanzee community in Nyungwe’s ancient forest is exhilarating in a way that is fundamentally different from, but equally as powerful as, the gorilla encounter on Day 4. Many visitors say the chimp trekking surprised them — they expected gorillas to be the highlight, and Nyungwe’s chimpanzees matched them.

Afternoon: Nyungwe Canopy Walkway

After returning from the chimp trek and taking lunch at your lodge, the afternoon is the Nyungwe Forest canopy walkway — a 200-metre suspension bridge system at approximately 50–70 metres above the forest floor. At this height you are at the level of the forest canopy roof — looking down onto the tops of trees rather than up at them, and surrounded by the animals that live in the light-filled upper forest zone.

The canopy walkway is accessed via a well-maintained trail from the Uwinka visitor centre (30–40 minutes walk). Once on the bridge, black-and-white colobus monkeys move through the canopy at eye level. Red colobus, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys are commonly visible. For birders, the walkway provides access to Albertine Rift endemic species — Rwenzori turacos, handsome francolins, and numerous forest raptors — that are almost invisible from the forest floor below.

The canopy walkway is rated easy to moderate — the access trail is slightly steep but short, and the walkway itself is firm and stable. Bring water, a fleece (canopy level is noticeably cooler and breezier than the forest floor), and binoculars.

DAY 7 Nyungwe to Kigali — Departure

After breakfast and checkout, your Gorilla Nests Safaris driver begins the 4–5 hour return drive to Kigali through Rwanda’s tea country and back north. If your international flight departs late afternoon or evening, there is time in Kigali for lunch and one final craft market visit. If flying morning, we arrange an early Nyungwe departure.

Your guide accompanies you to Kigali International Airport and stays through check-in. Your 7-day Rwanda gorilla and chimpanzee safari ends at the departure gate. Entry Visa

All nationalities obtain a Rwanda visa on arrival at Kigali International Airport: USD $50 for a 30-day tourist visa.
